Amaya Library dedication set for Friday

STAFF REPORT

The Hays CISD dedication ceremonies for the Fernando Amaya Memorial Library at Red Simon Middle School (SMS) will be at 6 p.m. Friday. The event is free and open to the public.

Kyle Mayor Mike Gonzalez and Michelle Chae, principal of SMS, will offer remarks during the ceremony celebrating the life and works of Mr. Amaya.

Mr. Amaya, a parent of students in the district and volunteer, was killed on Sept. 1, 2008, riding his bicycle on SH 150.

“Our library is the hub of the community,” said Chae. “Ongoing learning is something Mr. Amaya was interested in. Mrs. Amaya was honored that we would consider naming the library after him.”

Following the dedication ceremony, the cafeteria will be transformed into a magical Mercado with Mariachi, salsa music, dancing, singing, theater, visual art and food for the Hispanic Culture Celebration. The Cesar Chavez Art Contest and the Sandra Cisneros Writing Contest will be part of the festivities.
