STAFF REPORT

It’s Mass Comm Week at Texas State, where many speakers engaged to spice up the annual event. The lectures and discussions are free and open to the public.

The theme for this year’s Mass Com Week is “A Whole New Media: Keeping Up with the Changing Field of Mass Communication.”

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State brings in professionals for the event to speak to students about issues and trends in the ever-changing mass media. The event, focusing on new media, will also touch on the traditional media of television and newspapers and their roles in contemporary society.

“Right now there is a lot of discussion on the evolution of media,” Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Bruce Smith said. “Mass Comm Week allows us to bring this discussion to our students and our community.”

The event sponsors more than 30 sessions with media professionals. Some examples of the speakers and topics include Gary Vaynerchuk, author of Crush It! and host of “Wine Library TV” speaking on “Making a Name for Yourself with Social Media” at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and Dallas attorney Brian Cuban discussing “The 1st Amendment, the Internet and Hate Speech,” at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The keynote speaker of the event is Daniel Pink speaking on his book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, at Evans Audtorium Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Some of the sessions will be live-streamed at www.txstatemcweek.com. For more information on the event and lectures,  visit www.txstatemcweek.com
