STAFF REPORT

The San Marcos CISD’s Irene K. Mendez Elementary School will hold a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The newly renovated campus is located at 1805 Peter Garza Drive. The public is invited to attend. Tours of the facility will follow the ceremony.

The school’s namesake, Irene K. Mendez, was a veteran education who taught for 28 years in San Marcos CISD. Mendez was a native of San Marcos who attended Southside Elementary and San Marcos Junior High School and San Marcos High School. She earned her bachelors and masters degrees from Texas State (then called Southwest Texas State).

Mendez became a Master Bilingual kindergarten teacher. Mendez was very conscious of wanting to give something back to the community in which she was educated.  She was recognized as a Career Ladder Teacher, an award received for excellence in teaching. Her life was cut short by cancer.

Mendez Elementary School opened this fall after being fully renovated through the spring and summer of 2009. The school is the former site of Goodnight Junior High School, now Goodnight Middle School.

  1. Irene represents all educators through out our great nation. Educators who humbly and proudly give their hearts to each child. Irene was an exemplary role model to us all as a person, a mother, a wife, a friend and as an educator. Thank you Irene K. Mendez! Tonight you are a shining star!!!
