Bobcats, SLU, play to soccer tie

STAFF REPORT

Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana remained the only two unbeaten teams in the Southland Conference soccer standings Sunday, and they did it the hard way.

The two teams fought to a 0-0 tie at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

Texas State goaltender Mandi Mawyer, who leads the league in goals-against average, turned away all five Southeastern Louisiana shots in her 110 minutes in front of the net.

Erica Michaud and Britney Curry each made a bid to win the game for Texas State in the final minutes of double overtime, but they were turned away by Southeastern Louisiana goalie Lacey Brockhaus.

Texas State remains the Southland’s first place team at 5-0-1, though Southeastern Louisiana is right there at 4-0-1. The Bobcats are 10-5-1 overall, while the Lions are 10-3-1 overall.

The Bobcats had a much easier time last Friday night at home against Nicholls State, winning, 3-1, with a 23-7 shots advantage.

Curry scored just 51 seconds into the game for her 15th goal of the season. Taylor Kelley put the Bobcats back ahead with a goal thirty seconds after Nicholls tied the game. With less than 13 minutes left in the first half, Michaud scored for the Bobcats, making it 3-1.

The Bobcats will close out the Southland Conference home schedule in the next week, playing Stephen F. Austin Friday night (7 p.m.) and Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.). Texas State will end the regular season on Oct. 30 at Texas-San Antonio.
