San Marcos Baptist Academy (SMA) lost for the first time in the high school football season last Friday night as a topsy-turvy first half gave way to a more sedate second half.
The Bears lost, 34-31, at homecoming to Shiner St. Paul, falling to 4-1 for the season.
Big plays took the Bears to a 24-20 halftime lead as Michael Latham ran 50 yards for a touchdown, Anthony Richardson ran 44 yards for a touchdown and Mark Hamm returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.
But the big play spigot shut down for SMA in the second half. The Cardinals scored the first two touchdowns of the second half for a 34-24 lead and SMA couldn’t catch up.
The Bears will play again Friday night at San Antonio Christian.
