EmilyAnn has new play, new operations manager

Great Caesar’s ghost! EmilyAnn will present Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

In October, the EmilyAnn Theatre, 1103 FM 2325 in Wimberley, will present a new play with a new Theater Operations Manager. Although “new” is somewhat of a misnomer since Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar was first produced in 1599 and newly named operations manager, Bridget Farias, first directed for the theater in 2008.

Farias, in addition to her BFAs in acting and directing from Texas State, studied at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, England. She is a company member of the Austin Shakespeare Festival, The Search Party, and the City Theatre in Austin. She is also the artistic director of the Full Circle Theatre Company.

When the EmilyAnn Theatre produced Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night this year, it was Ferias who did the directing and teaching. She also teaches at the Scottish Rite Children’s Theatre where she is also a member of the company.

All of this theatrical experience bodes well for the upcoming production of Julius Caesar which is set to take place every Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in October. Ferias has been planning and teaching the EmilyAnn’s fall classes and has been rehearsing Julius Caesar there.

The popular play of ego, jealousy, political power, pride, murder, suicide and mystical signs of foreboding, has been performed in many guises over the years. Orson Welles staged the play with Nazi-like costumes and sets in 1937. In the 1970s, the Guthrie Theater performed the play as though it were part and parcel of the Mexican Revolution. While these themes were extreme, EmilyAnn’s production of the play does promise to surprise attendees with some creative use of its outdoor space.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children. They are available at the door or online at emilyann.org. The first productions are Oct. 2 and 3. While Caesar should beware the ides of march, attendees should not fear the rain. The rain out location is at the Katherine Ann Porter School, 515 FM 2325.
