The City of San Marcos is preparing for the 2009 Veteran’s Day Parade to be held on Nov. 7. The city’s veteran’s affairs advisory committee is being assisted by local veteran’s organizations. The theme of this year’s parade is “Honoring All Who Served.”
The city invites veterans groups, military organizations, civic clubs, bands, drill teams, public officials, equestrians, youth teams, classic vehicle owners and others who would like to join the parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. and make its way through downtown San Marcos.
The much-enjoyed, free biscuit-and-gravy breakfast will be served on the Hays County Courthouse lawn beginning at 8. a.m.
For the second year in a row, parade organizers are seeking nominations for a parade grand marshall. The veteran (or veterans) chosen for the parade leadership role will be selected by a non-partisan committee.
A grand marshall nominee must be a resident of San Marcos who served in the military during a time of conflict. Nominees must be honorably discharged from the service and should be willing to share their military service memories and experiences.
The nominations may be submitted to Lisa Morris at email@example.com. They can also be dropped off or mailed to the Parks and Recreation Department office at the Grant Harris Jr. Building, 401 East Hopkins Street.
Each nomination must include the nominee’s full name, address, and phone number, as well as some details regarding the nominee’s military experience. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 1. An electronic nomination is preferred.
The deadline for entering the parade is Oct. 16. Organizations desiring participation in the event may sign up at the Parks and Recreation Department office or by calling (512) 393-8400.
