This year is looking like a good one for the San Marcos speech and debate team. Adding luster to last year’s success, the team went to a tournament at Brandeis High School in San Antonio last week and continued its winning ways.

Six students advanced to the final round of Student Congress. Two of the finalists, sophomore Amber Navarette and freshman Nicole Perkins, had never been in tournament competition.

In fact, of the tournament’s top eight places, fifty percent were San Marcos team members. Senior Kelly Mathis placed third, scoring four of the required 10 poits for state qualification. Seniors Julie Munoz, Kristine Staggs and Ben Painton took fifth, sixth and seventh places, respectively. Munos picked up two points toward a championship invitation. Staggs and Painton each scored one point.

“This is a huge start for the team, which looks to capitalize on its amazing year last season, where they laid claim to the state championship in extemporaneous speaking,” said speech and debate Coach C.J. Odam.

The team has been invited to the prestigious Stanford University Invitational in February next year. The team is actively pursuing fundraising for this trip.

The team will be traveling to O’Connor High School next week in pursuit of more forensic victories.
