STAFF REPORT

The San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) has added nine vehicles with a new design and painted in the traditional black and white. The department will use the new design as it gradually replaces the white patrol cars currently in use.

Captain Travis Yates of Policeone.com said more and more urban forces are reverting back to the black and white color scheme. Police officers he talked to from across the country said the public has had a positive response to the black and white color scheme on law enforcement vehicles. The change is even credited with making the police seem more visible and accessible.

Recent surveys have indicated that both the morale of police officers and citizens’ feelings of security increase with the use of the black and white car.

  1. Recent surveys have indicated that the morale of police officers increase with the use of the black and white car? Seriously?

  2. I didn’t see anything scientific at first glance, but it might be there. Google “black and white police cars morale” and see if you see anything.

There were plenty of anecdotal claims, like

“With the traditional look, it appears that an increase in officer morale follows. Officers from across the country have overwhelmingly supported a change to black and white cars. A recent vote in a large Midwest municipal police department revealed that 83% of the officers were strongly in favor of transitioning to a black and white vehicle. The popularity of black and white cars by the officers has a positive impact on any administrator that chooses to make the change.”

Personally, I prefer them to all of the “stealth” cars they have down here in San Antonio and some of the surrounding areas.
