The CenturyTel Premier at Strahan Coliseum last weekend gave the Texas State volleyball team a glimpse of light during a dark early season, but that light went out in the finals.
Texas A&M won the championship with a three-set win against the Bobcats by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-20.
The Aggies won the first two games without apparent tension, as each game had only one lead change. However, the third game was tied as late as 19-19 before A&M built a lead.
Texas State and A&M each blew past Hofstra and Texas Southern with near equal ease to qualify for the championship game. A&M swept each of them in three games, while the Bobcats swept Texas Southern and beat Hofstra, 3-1.
Shelbi Irvin and Mo Middleton both were named to the all-tournament team for Texas State. Irvin had 52 assists and 19 digs, while recording another double-double for 13 assists and 11 digs against A&M. Middleton recorded 35 kills, 20 digs and four service aces during the tournament.
Texas State plays Houston at Strahan Coliseum Tuesday night (6:30 p.m.). The Bobcats are 3-8 overall with four matches left before the Southland Conference season starts on Sept. 24, when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi visits Strahan Coliseum.
