A record-setting home crowd of 2,389 fans saw the Texas State volleyball team claim its first win of the season Wednesday night, when the Bobcats knocked off Texas Tech in three games at Strahan Coliseum.
Jessica Weynand led all Bobcats with 14 kills, while Mo Middleton had 13. Brittany Collins recorded her fourth straight match of 10 or more digs, with 30 against Tech.
“The atmosphere in here tonight was amazing,” Texas State coach Karen Chisum said. “We beat a Big 12 team, Texas Tech, and we couldn’t have done it without you,”
The crowd beat the old Strahan Coliseum record for volleyball, set in 2005, by 500.
“With the crowd really getting into the game it really helped us gain momentum,” said Middleton.
The Bobcats won the first two sets by scores of 35-23 and 26-24 before winning the third a little more easily.
Texas State now is 1-3 for the season.
Weynand gave the Bobcats a 24-23 lead in the first game with an ace, then Texas State made a service error to put it in the win column for Texas State. The Bobcats won the second game in a similar way, with Middleton’s kill giving them a 25-24 lead and a Tech attach error giving them another win.
Texas State goes to Milwaukee Friday and Saturday for the Marquette Invitational. The Bobcats will face Marquette, Austin Peay and Butler.
