STAFF REPORT

The winner of the fifth annual Naturescapes photo contest will be announced at a ceremony on Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 East Hopkins Street.

The contest, which emphasizes photographs of the natural beauty of Hays County, is co-sponsored by the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance and the Hill Country Photography Club. The public is invited to attend.

The prizes for the contest include a $200 prize for Best in Show, a $150 prize for the best San Marcos photograph and up to four additional $100 Award of Excellence prizes given to outstanding photographs.

The contest judge was Greg Lazely, author of  “Greg Lazely’s Texas Wildlife Portraits” (Texas A&M University Press). Lazely’s photographic credits exceed 2,000 published images in more than 100 different books and periodicals.

Music for the affair will be performed by the Crystal Creek Boys. A regular act at Triple Crown and other local music venues, the Hill Country bluegrass-folk-punk band is comprised of San Marcos-based musicians.

A silent auction also will be conducted at the awards ceremony this year and will feature books, photos and plants. A full listing of the items is available at http://smgreenbeltauction.blogspot.com.

The 66 photographs accepted for the Naturescapes exhibition will be on display in the Walkers Gallery in the Activity Center through Oct. 31. The exhibit is sponsored by the San Marcos Art Council and the City of San Marcos.
