SMPD investigates homicide

San Marcos police are investigating an overnight shooting that claimed the life of 30-year-old Byron Burse at an apartment complex early Wednesday morning.

San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) Commander Terry Nichols said police responded to the Kelsea’s Place Apartments at 518 Linda Drive just after midnight, when callers reported hearing gunshots in the complex.

Police found Burse in his apartment suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) by San Marcos/Hays County EMS.

Burse was later pronounced dead. Nichols said it was the first homicide in San Marcos since January 2008.

The victim’s wife was in the apartment at the time of the shooting and was not harmed.

Police learned that the victim had been involved in an earlier altercation at the apartment complex. Around midnight, an unknown male subject kicked in the door to the victim’s apartment and shot Burse numerous times before fleeing.

The homicide is under investigation by the SMPD Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone with information regarding this crime is encouraged to call police at (512) 753-2300 or (512) 753-2108.
