Junior Britney Curry scored two first-half goals last Friday night, leading the Texas State soccer team to a 2-0 win against St. Mary’s in the Bobcats’ 2009 season opener.
Curry scored off an assist from Jessica Lewis ten minutes into the game, knocking in the ball from eight yards out. Less than 12 minutes later, Curry took a give-and-go pass from Erica Michaud and knocked it in for a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats outshot St. Mary’s 19-7 for the night, taking 13 shots on goal in the first half.
“I think we came out fit and intense and it caught St. Mary’s off guard,” Texas State coach Kat Conner said. “I don’t think they expected us to be that quick so early in the game, but our offense attacked the ball all night and we worked very well together to put the game away early.”
Before the game, the Bobcats held an open house, unveiling the newly renovated playing facility and the brand new player lounge and locker room area. The summer renovations to the Bobcat Soccer Complex included canopy-covered bench seating for the home and visiting teams, a covered press area, a stadium -style meeting room, new player lockers and a showering facility.
However, the Bobcats won’t play another game in the facility until Sept. 18 against Grambling State. In the meantime, they embark on a six-game road trip that starts Friday at California-Irvine.
“I’m excited to see what lies ahead,” said Connor, “because I know that as the season continues, we will get faster and the team will become better acquainted with each other’s playing styles and thing will come together more easily.”Email | Print
