Bobcats picked to win Southland volleyball

The volleyball coaches and sports information directors (SID) have picked Texas State to defend its regular season Southland Conference championship by a comfortable margin.

The Bobcats received six of 12 first-place votes from the coaches and five of 12 first place votes from the SIDs, picking up 129 points in the coaches poll and 122 points in the SID poll. combined polling. Central Arkansas came in second in the coaches poll with 118 total points, while Lamar turned up second in the SID poll with 114 points.

The Bobcats return four starters from last year’s team that won the regular season championship, but couldn’t pick up the Southland Conference tournament title needed to enter the NCAA Tournament. Jessica Weynand returns as a first-team all-conference selection for Texas State.

The 2009 Southland Conference volleyball season officially begins Aug. 28, with conference play beginning Sept. 24. The conference tournament will be held Nov. 20-22 at the Texas-San Antonio Convocation Center.
