Texas State enters preseason NIT

The Preseason National Invitational Tournament (NIT) debuted in 1985 with three semifinalists meeting in the Final Four at the end of the season. That’s not likely to happen this coming college basketball season.

However, Texas State is in the tournament, slated for an appearance at Arizona State on Nov. 16 in a first-round game. It will be the first time Texas State has appeared in the tournament. Arizona State will be the host team for the West Regional.

Second round games will be played on Nov. 17. The semifinals will move to Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 25, with the championship game to be played on Nov. 27.

Among the teams in this year’s tournament, only Duke, Louisiana State and Connecticut are at least sometimes national contenders.

The other teams in this year’s field are Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, Elon, Texas Christian, California State Northridge, Colgate, Hofstra, Yale, Western Kentucky, Indiana State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Last year, Oklahoma beat Purdue for the preseason NIT title.
