The Greater San Marcos Youth Council (GSMYC), in partnership with the Texas State Office of Community Relations and the SOAR initiative, is collecting school supplies for needy families.
The deadline for donations is Aug. 14. The supplies can be dropped off 8 a.m.- 5p.m. Monday through Friday at the Texas State Office of Community Relations, River House, 304 CM Allen Parkway.
Some of the supplies that are being requested are: highlighters, erasers, pencils, black or blue pens, washable markers, glue and glue sticks, colored pencils, giant markers, water colors, crayons, spiral notebooks, paper, folders, scissors, index cards, school supply boxes, and facial tissue. Elementary school children are in greater need of supplies than high school students.
For the past six years, the GSMYC organized this drive and passed out supplies. This year will mark a change in distribution. The GSMYC will give the supplies directly to the public schools. The teachers will then determine student needs.
“The teachers have a better idea of which children really need supplies because they are the ones who interact with the children on an almost daily basis,” said Julia Ramsey, GSMYC Executive Director.
“Many families in our community have difficulty affording school supplies,” said Michelle Pope, director of P16 at Texas State. “Donating these supplies helps all of our children to have the tools they need to be successful throughout the entire school year.”
Financial contributions can be mailed to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council, P.O. Box 1455, San Marcos, TX 78666.
