Texas State football team opens fall drills

SUBMITTED REPORT

The Texas State football team began preparations for its 2009 season Sunday afternoon when the Bobcats held their first practice in shorts and helmets on the Texas State practice field.

“It was a good first day,” said head coach Brad Wright. “We had a bunch of players running around in shorts and getting after it. We saw some things where we need to get better, but we can improve on those. It is always exciting to get out there on the first day and get the guys going the right direction.”

Each of Texas State’s offensive and defensive units worked separately on various drills before they practiced against each other in some simulations. There also was some time spent working with various special teams.

“We have a lot of guys returning on offense so we looked pretty good with our top units,” said Wright. “Defensively, you can tell we are several pages ahead of last year because the foundation is there.”

The Bobcats will continue preparing for the Sept. 5 season-opening game against Angelo State on Monday morning when they begin their second workout at 8 a.m.
