The San Marcos High School (SMHS) Striking Rattlers cheerleaders and mascot brought home honors and awards after attending the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) cheerleader and mascot camp at Texas State. The students learned a variety of new material, including sideline cheers, dances and new elite stunts.

All the cheerleaders at the camp were evaluated on a variety of tasks. Following the evaluations in a number of categories, the Rattler Cheerleaders garnered superior ribbons in all of them. Cheer sponsor Vicky Moreno said, “Earning superior ribbons for each task earned the squad a superior trophy at the awards ceremony.”

Rattler mascot Junior James Wheatley also earned a trophy of excellence at the UCA camp.

Each cheerleading squad was allowed to nominate up to six members of their team to try out for the UCA All-American Cheerleader Award. Two Rattler cheerleaders garnered this award, senior captain Angela Mendoza and junior co-captain Aubrey Rodriguez. Both of the award winners are invited to attend the London Varsity Tour 2010 on New Year’s Day, where the UCA All-Americans will perform in what is said to be the world’s greatest parade. The street spectators in London for the event are estimated to be more than one million people, with an additional 20 million who will watch the event  on television.

The SMHS Junior Varsity cheerleading squad took part in a different camp this summer. The Elite private cheerleading camp they attended awarded them an Award of Excellence ribbon in recognition of the squad’s outstanding effort and performance in all areas of cheerleading.

Each member had the opportunity to compete for the title of Elite All-American Cheerleader. Six members of the junior varsity squad were chosen as Elite All-American cheerleaders, including junior Jaime Rodriguez and freshmen Elena Zavala, Amanda Barrientos, Naomi Godina, Amanda Saucedo, and Tess Thomson.

Each received a Certificate of Excellence, a signature All-American emblem patch and an opportunity to perform at a bowl game in Orlando, FL.
