A young boy with a cigarette lighter apparently caused a 500-acre brush fire off FM 2325 west of Wimberley Monday, according to Hays County Fire Marshal Mark Chambers.
Hays County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) spokesman Leroy Opiela said the blaze was about 75 percent contained as of shortly after 9 p.m. Though the blaze covered a wide range, there were “no lost houses, no injuries,” Opiela said.
About 80 firefighters in 20 pieces of fire equipment went out to fight the blaze, including all the Hays County fire departments, as well as firefighters from Austin, Manchaca, Travis County, Canyon Lake and Oak Hill, among others.
The Texas Forest Service sent out choppers, winged air craft and bulldozers.
Opiela said about 15 pieces were to watch the scene overnight to make sure the fire didn’t re-kindle.
Through Opiela, Chambers said the boy who apparently started the fire is eight or nine years old.Email | Print
