Hays County offers back to school immunizations

The Hays County Personal Health Department (HCPHD) will offer free back-to-school immunizations on July 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Personal Health Clinic. All immunizations required to attend Texas public schools will be offered, including newly required ones for students starting kindergarten and seventh grade. The Personal Health Clinic is located at 401-A Broadway in San Marcos.

“Under Texas law, children must have required immunizations or they will not be allowed to attend school,” HCPHD Director Priscilla Hargraves said. “It is important to have these immunizations because they are required by state law, but even more importantly, we want to protect our children from diseases that these vaccines can prevent.”

Additionally, CommuniCare Health Centers will hold a “CommuniCaring-for-kids Immunization Health Fair” on Aug. 5 from 2-7 p.m. at its San Marcos clinic, located at 1340 Wonder World Drive, Suite 4201. Immunizations will be free to qualifying families with proof of income.

The HCPHD offers immunizations for $10, regardless of the number of immunizations needed, for those unable to attend the free clinics. On Mondays, from 1-6 p.m., and Tuesdays, from 1-4 p.m., immunizations will be available at the San Marcos clinic and the Kyle clinic. The Kyle clinic is located at 150 Lockhart Road.

On the first Thursday of every month, immunizations are also offered for the same fee at the Hays County Precinct 4 building, located at 195 Roger Hanks Parkway in Dripping Springs.

The HCPHD, in addition to the free clinics, will offer $10 immunizations on Aug. 12-13, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1-5 p.m. They will also be offered on Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1-3 p.m. at its San Marcos and Kyle clinics.

Parents need to bring their child’s immunization record and authorization card if they are in the Medicaid or CHIP programs. HCPHD also offers immunizations to adults aged 19 and over for $25, regardless of the number of needed vaccines. However, a shingles vaccine costs $50. No one will be turned away due to an inability to pay, however.
