STAFF REPORT

Bowie Elementary School Principal Karen McGowan was awarded the Title I, Part A Distinguished Performance Award on June 15.

The award was presented by Dr. Pat Pringle, executive director for the Region 13 Education Service Center during a meeting of the San Marcos CISD (SMCISD) School Board.

The criteria for the award includes meeting adequate yearly progress in 2007 and 2008, having more than 40 percent of Bowie students classified as low-income and being rated Exemplary or Recognized in either 2006 or 2007 and Exemplary in 2008.

“How difficult is this achievement?” asked Pringle. “Out of the 4,385 elementary campuses in Texas, only 312 achieve Distinguished Performance status. Statewide, Bowie Elementary is in a group of seven percent of Texas schools.”

Continued Pringle, “Bowie Elementary is one of eight campuses in the region to be recognized. Therefore, Bowie Elementary is in a group of less than one-and-a-half percent of Region 13 campuses.”

There are 563 campuses in Region 13. The Region 13 Education Service Center is one of 20 that serve Texas educational needs. The service center is a liaison between the Texas Education Agency and local school districts by disseminating information and conducting training and consultation for both federal and state programs.
