School library named for late district volunteer

STAFF REPORT

The Hays CISD (HCISD) school board unanimously approved naming the library at Red Simon Middle School for Fernando Amaya, who was killed on Sept. 1, 2008, while riding his bicycle on SH 150.

Amaya, whose children attended HCISD schools, was a well liked and respected district volunteer.

“Our plan for the library is for it to be the hub of the community,” said Simon Principal Michelle Chae. “Ongoing learning is something Mr. Amaya was interested in. Mrs. Amaya was honored that we would consider naming the library after him.”

Others had high praise for Amaya, as well.

“All of us were impressed with this gentleman,” said Hays CISD Trustee Ralph Pfluger. “He had nothing and made himself into something. He stood for what we’re trying to do there.”

Said Hays CISD Trustees Secretary Joe Muñoz, “This will be a great hub of that community. It is going to be one of our prizes.”
