Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) has established a new initiative, known as the Green Team, to bring recycling and Earth-friendly practices to the hospital and its employees.
To kick off these efforts, a Green Living Fair was held in CTMC’s main lobby. Area vendors offered advice on steps that can be taken to make a positive environmental impact at work and at home.
The fair welcomed 168 employees, volunteers and physicians, who all signed pledge forms committing to green friendly actions. The list includes carpooling, using mugs and washable glasses instead of disposable cups and limiting the number of printed materials. Employees unable to attend the fair have also pledged their commitments, as well.
“I am proud that so many of our employees are committed to preserving nature and our beautiful community,” said CTMC President and CEO Gary Jepson. “The environment has a big impact on health and by being good stewards of our environment we are helping in a small way to enhance the health of those in our community.”
CTMC’s new expansion, slated to open in November, features such green initiatives as construction activity pollution prevention, energy efficient lighting and environmentally friendly materials. This is in addition to already existing programs, such as printing its quarterly health publication, Hill Country Health, on 100 percent recycled paper, additional parking for bicycles and motorcycles and fewer but longer shifts to reduce commutes.
“Our goal is to make the new addition to the hospital as environmentally friendly as possible,” said Fred Jackson, CTMC Green Team Leader and Administrative Director of Support Services. “As CTMC expands to meet the needs of our growing community, it’s important that we remain conscious of our impact on the environment.”
The Green Team’s next scheduled event will be a lunch and learn session on water conservation in our daily lives, which will be held in CTMC’s main classroom on July 22, from 12-1 p.m.
