Texas State senior shortstop Alex Newton is going pro after signing with the Philadelphia Force of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league.
Newton started every game of her career at Texas State and ended it as the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2009, when she led the league in hits (62) and batting average (.332). She also led the Bobcats in total bases (96) and at-bats (187).
Newton is in the top ten all-time at Texas State in batting average (.293), at-bats (669), runs (106), hits (195), doubles (41), triples (seven), home runs (14), RBI (87), total bases (292), stolen bases (37) and walks (55).
Only one other Texas State player has played softball professionally. Kristen Zaleski played for the Rockford Thunder from 2004 to 2008. In 2005, Zaleski was the NPF Most Valuable Player after leading the league in batting (.468), triples (10) and stolen bases (33).Email | Print
