Letter to the Editor: A candidate responds

Dear Editor:

I am responding to the letter from some “independent” candidates for the Pedernales Electrical Cooperative’s (PEC) board of directors that was recently sent to multiple newspapers. I want to address some of the misleading allegations directed to me — albeit not by specific name — and to set the record straight.

First of all, we are actively engaged in only the second open, democratically conducted election in PEC history. We owe this opportunity to reform groups that successfully fought to bring an end to the self-perpetuating abuses of old-guard leadership at PEC. If members of the PEC4U Steering Committee and other committed PEC members, like David Hall, had not dared to challenge the old regime, PEC would still be controlled by the Fuelberg/Burnett machine.

This year as last, PEC4U and other groups such as Clean Water Action invited all candidates to respond to their on-line questionnaires. Of the current 11 candidates, 7 candidates actively sought endorsements by responding to the questionnaires (Boone, Landaker, Rogers, Mayfield, Cox, Jenkins and Clement). The four that chose not to respond had the right to remove themselves from consideration. In the end, each organization endorsed three candidates: Clement, Landaker and Cox.

Now, those un-endorsed or “independent” candidates are complaining. Now, they want to muddy the waters and cast sinister doubts on the very organizations that four of them actively sought endorsements from, the very organizations that only last year, successfully broke down the PEC barriers to open elections. Further, they want you to believe that “endorsed” candidates by PEC4U or others must be untrustworthy zombies.

No group has ever claimed, as alleged to have “exclusive rights” to determine what is best for PEC. Nowhere in the process was I asked to check in my brain, my business acumen, or my integrity or sign any allegiance document in blood. It is sad to see these self-described “independent” candidates casting aspersions now that other candidates have been endorsed.

I declared as a PEC candidate because after almost 2 years of time attending Board meetings and court hearings and doing my homework with the Navigant Report, I knew I could bring to the Board 13 years of sound cooperative experience plus 24 years of Air Force senior procurement experience and a proven track record of integrity, ethics and fiduciary responsibility. I am committed to making PEC a stronger co-op, one that is responsive to members/owners. They have been disregarded for far too long.

I urge PEC members to reclaim their co-op by voting for candidates with proven track records and recognized accomplishments. I trust that few members will be misled by the scare tactics of candidates who, having failed to win endorsements themselves, now want to attack the three candidates who were endorsed, as well as the organizations involved.

Sincerely,

Cristi Clement

  1. Ms. Clements, it is you and your friends at pec4u who have created the scare tactics. You and your special interest group consistently mislead the public about current events at PEC in order to take control of the co-op. You are neither the best qualified candidate nor will you be the most representative of the membership. If you were reallly so well qualified and concerned with the PEC membership then you wouldn’t need special interest group endorsements in order to win. Those independent candidates have not failed to “win” endorsements, they have EARNED the respect of the membership by educating themselves in an OBJECTIVE manner and by LISTENING to the needs and concerns of the entire membership. You, however, just follow the lead of a narrow-minded and secretive group of people. I call upon you, Larry Landaker, and Patrick Cox to drop out of the race. You three are the proverbial sheep in wolf’s clothing.

  2. Cristi, your claim that you and pec4u are responsible for the changes at the PEC is laughable. I have friends who lost thier job at PEC trying change things around there. The only difference between my friends and yours is that my friends don’t run to reporters trying to take credit for it.

  3. Somehow, my original comments were not printed, so will try again: Christi, just too much inaccurate information here. Clean Water did not invite candidates to participate in a questionaire last year. They simply endorsed the same PEC4U candidates last year, as this year. I’ve been to ALL the meetings since March 2008. I NEVER saw you at any of these mneetings until about November 2008. There weren’t that many members at any of these meetings, so I believe I would have noticed you. Yes, you were at the lawsuit hearing. Second, two of us who filled out the CWA questionaire did so simply to get the coverage. We KNEW there was no hope of being endorsed. As previous candidates, we knew the lay of the land well in advance. Another also knew it to be a waste of time and chose not to respond. Two independents haven’t done anything anywhere, so no surprise. But they still had the right to be heard via the letter. There is just no way around the fact that special interest groups do not represent the majority of the members. Endorsements by them need to be carefully considered in relationship to the PEC membership as a whole.

    Respectfully,

    Linda Kaye Rogers

I ask you, Mrs. Clements, don’t ALL the candidates have the right to be heard without calling it “complaining”? Not sure where you got that from the letter. “Me thinks thou dost protest too much”

  4. Mrs. Clemens: I’m afraid I must agree with Ms. Rogers on at least one point–meeting attendance. I attended just about every board meeting from October 2007 (when no members appeared welcome I might add) until July of 2008, plus January of this year. I never once saw you at any one of them in 07 and 08 while I saw Sandy Jenkins numerous times. And then when you were there in Jan this year, you were hanging out huddled with your buddies from PEC4U. All I’m saying is let’s be honest here. If you attended a few meetings this year, fine, or even if you did a few last year too, but don’t overplay your hand lest you leave us wondering about other things, too.
