Deadline approaching for LBJ Museum golf tournament

SUBMITTED REPORT

The time clock is running out for folks interested in playing a round of golf for a good cause. The deadline for signing up to play in the Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos’ seventh annual Golf Tournament is Thursday, June 11.

The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2009, at San Marcos’ own Quail Creek Country Club Golf Course. LBJ Museum Board Vice President Steve Searle of Ozona Bank says teams entered number 14 confirmed.

The latest team to enter is from Pedernales Electric Cooperative. Others include Frost Bank, Butler Manufacturing, Ted Breihan Electric, Ozona National Bank, Century Tel, R.P. Contractors, B. E. Hughes, Grande Communications, Scott Gregson, Richard Garza, Lupe Carbajal, Texas State’s McCoy College of Business Administration and Christ the Redeemer Church.

Golfers are in for a couple of special treats this year – KVUE-TV’s daybreak and midday meteorologist Meghan Danahey will serve as a guest putter for each team on the 18th green and champion griller Hays County Precinct 1 Constable David Peterson will cook up the hamburgers for lunch.

Last year’s tournament raised more than $5,000 for the museum. Proceeds from the golf tournament sponsorships and entry fees benefit the non-profit museum that focuses in part on the 36th U.S. President’s days in San Marcos at what is now Texas State University-San Marcos where he graduated with a teaching certificate in 1930. The museum, located on the square in downtown San Marcos, has been open since December 2006.

According to Searle, sponsorships are still available at three levels – $1,000 for gold, $500 for silver and $150 for hole sponsors. The cost for golfers is $300 for a four-person team or $80 for individual golfers. Golf fees include green fees, golf carts and lunch.

Additional information on the golf tournament may be obtained by calling Searle at (512) 754-2611 or (512) 787-4258 or by email at steves@ozonabank.com or by contacting Jordan at 353-3300 or by e-mail at director@lbjmuseum.com.

On-site registration opens at 7:30 a.m. on June 13 with golfers facing an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament will follow the four-person Florida Scramble format. Trophies will be awarded for each winning team member and prizes will be given for “closest to the pin” and longest drive. Golfers will also have a shot at door prizes and what is predicted to be a great lunch.

The museum is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. To arrange special tours or for more information on the museum, call (512) 353-3300.
