SMHS cheerleader donates ponytail

Victoria Almanzar.

STAFF REPORT

San Marcos High School (SMHS) Varsity Cheerleader Victoria Almanzar recently donated her ponytail to the non-profit organization “Locks of Love.”

“Locks of Love” provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18, who suffer form long term hair loss from any medical diagnosis.

Almanzar, a sophomore, said she hopes to inspire others to donate.

“This is an awesome gesture,” said SMHS Varsity Cheer Sponsor Vicky Moreno. “Hopefully, after seeing Victoria and finding out how easy it is to donate, more students, parents and teachers will do the same.”

According to “Locks of Love,” it takes six to ten ponytails to assemble one hairpiece. Most of the children assisted by the organization have lost their hair due to a medical condition called Alopecia areata, or spot baldness, which has no known cause or cure. The hairpieces help restore children’s confidence and self-esteem.
