Top-seeded Texas beat Army, 3-1, Friday night at Disch-Falk in the first round of the NCAA baseball tournament.
The Longhorns (42-13-1) advance to the second round of the winner’s bracket in the Austin Regional, a four-team, double-elimination tournament. Texas will play Saturday at 6 p.m. against Boston College (34-24), which beat Texas State, 8-7, Friday afternoon.
The Bobcats (41-16) will play Army (34-20) at noon Saturday.
“We didn’t come down here just to compete,” Army coach Joe Sottolano said. “We came down here to win. Honestly, I want to strap it on and play right now against (Texas).
Army, which won the Patriot League, entered the NCAA Tourmanent with a .334 team batting average. The Knights’ leading hitter is designated hitter Joey Henshaw, who is batting .386 with 11 home runs. Shortstop Clint Moore is hitting .394 with 10 homers.
Texas led Friday night’s game all the way against Army, scoring single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings for a 3-0 lead.Email | Print
