Texas State entered this week’s Southland Conference baseball tournament as the top seed and played like it Wednesday night, taking a good start from pitcher Kane Holbrooks and hitting three home runs for a 9-2 win against Stephen F. Austin at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi.
With their nine runs, the Bobcats set a single-season record for run scoring, running their mark for the season up to 461. The previous record was 452 in 2001.
Holbrooks allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings, running his record to 10-1. Tyler Brundridge gave up one hit in two innings to finish out the easy victory.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in emblematic fashion, with Paul Goldschmidt hitting a three-run homer to make it 3-0 in the third inning.
Texas State added another three in the fifth when Lance Loftin homered with one out and Tyler Sibley later hit a two-run homer, increasing the Bobcats lead to 7-1
“We are a victorious team today,” Texas State coach Ty Harrington said. “The old saying goes that you take one victory at time and that is what we’re going to do…take each victory at a time. Hopefully tomorrow will be victorious for us again.”
The Bobcats will play their second-round game Thursday at 7 p.m. against Lamar, which beat Texas-Arlington (UTA) Wednesday.
The tournament is set up as two double-elimination tournaments with four teams each. The winner from each side will meet Saturday for the tournament championship and the league’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
