San Marcos Baptist Academy (SMBA) recognized two individuals during its May 17 commencement for their dedication and service to the academy.
Isbel Rodriguez, a 34-year veteran of the academy who retired in 2008, was the first recipient of the Victor H. Schmidt Servant Leadership Award. Named in honor of former SMBA President Vic Schmidt, the award is presented to a staff member who best represents the qualities of servant leadership modeled by the award’s namesake, including loyalty, devotion to duty, service and personal courage.
Faculty member Chris Carrier won the B.A. Copass, Sr. Outstanding Teacher Award. The award is named for a former teacher and SMBA dean who graduated in 1917. It is given to a full-time faculty member for professionalism and exemplary personal qualities.
Carrier has been on the SMBA faculty for 12 years, teaching religion and speech. He also served previously as campus minister.
