Derailers to open city summer concert series

The Derailers will open the San Marcos “Summer in the Park” concert series on June 4.

STAFF REPORT

The San Marcos Performing Arts Association and the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department are making the final preparations for the annual Summer in the Park outdoor concert series Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. from June 4 through Aug. 13.

With support from the San Marcos Arts Commission, the San Marcos Daily Record and the series sponsors – San Marcos Baptist Academy and Texas Nursing and Rehab of San Marcos – Summer in the Park will celebrate its 23rd year of performances, beginning Thursday, June 4, at the San Marcos Plaza stage.

The season will kick off with a performance by an annual favorite, the Derailers, sponsored by Frost Bank. The Austin-based quintet, united by a passion for Buck Owens and the Beatles – with some Buddy Holly thrown in – has satisfied audiences for 15 years.

The Derailers play a tried-and-true blend of honky-tonk, rockabilly and good ol’, Texas-flavored rock ‘n’ roll. The performance will be a fine mix of two-step-ready tunes and equally danceable, hold-your-sweetheart-close ballads.

Additional performances this season include:

June 11: Mariachi Nueva Generacion

June 18: O’Malarkey and Joel Schwartz Band

June 25: Kent Finlay’s Songwriters Circle

July 2: Hill Country Community Band

July 9: Terri Hendrix Band

July 16: Hill Country Brass

July 23: Mission City Hot Rhythm Cats

July 30: Salsa Del Rio

August 6: Heart of Texas Chorus

August 13: Two Tons of Steel

Patron sponsors for the musical series are Frost Bank, G & L Communications, Redwood Springs Retirement and Assistant Living Center, Horizon Bay – A Retirement Residence, CenturyTel, Central Texas Medical Center, Grande Communications, Price Seniors Center, Ernie’s Paint and Body Shop, Noon Lions Club, San Marcos Auto Outlet, Broadway Bank and John Navarrette/CenturyTel.

Concessions will be available.
