A three-game series to end the regular baseball season for Texas State resulted in an even split in Arlington (UTA). The Bobcats won won ione, Texas-Arlington won one and a third game Sunday was rained out.
Thus, the Bobcats end their regular season 38-14 overall and, more important for the moment, 24-7 in the Southland Conference, good for the regular season league championship. The Bobcats will go to the league tournament as the top seed this weekend in Corpus Christi, opening against No. 8 seed Stephen F. Austin, (23-30, 14-18).
The Bobcats opened their series in Arlington Friday night with an 8-6 win in ten innings. Kyle Kubitza homered for the game-winning run in the top of the tenth. Tyler Sibley later singled in an insurance run.
Sibley went three-for-six with two RBI, while Martinson added a home run for the Bobcats.
Texas State ace Kane Holbrooks left the game with a 6-3 lead after five innings. However, UTA scored three runs over the next four innings against relievers Tyler Brundridge and Lance Loftin.
The Bobcats’ tenth-inning heroics made a winner out of Loftin, who improved to 3-0. Michael Russo pitched a shutout tenth inning for his sixth save of the season.
Texas State lost, 14-6, Saturday as UTA pounced on Bobcats starter Brian Borski for seven runs in three innings. Despite Borski’s poor start, the Bobcats were still within 7-6 after they rallied for six runs in the fourth inning. Kyle Livingstone hit a two-run single in the inning, followed by Sibley’s two-run double and run-scoring hits by Bret Atwood (a triple) and Paul Goldschmidt (a single).
However, UTA scored six runs in the fifth inning when Livingston and Goldschmidt each made errors to set up a grand slam by Mike Otteman, who finished the game with seven RBI.
