The Auto Task Force of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) will offer free Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etching on May 29 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Task Force, comprised of law enforcement detectives from multiple agencies, believes VIN etching is a deterrent to auto theft. The etchings will take place in the Home Depot parking lot located at U.S. 290 and RR 12 in Dripping Springs.
According to the HCSO, auto thefts have been on the rise. Many of the thefts take place at night, and many victims left items out in plain view with the vehicle unlocked. Often, multiple burglaries take place in the same subdivision.
Arrests have been made in some of these cases, and some property has been recovered. However, the majority of the cases remain unsolved.
The HCSO urges all residents to lock their vehicles, even if they are going to be away for short periods of time. Valuables should be removed from vehicles by either locking them in the trunk or taking them inside a residence.
To have a VIN etched, participants will need proof of vehicle ownership and a picture ID. For more information, contact the HCSO Crime Prevention Office at (512) 393-7373.Email | Print
