The Texas State softball team will make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003 Friday as it takes on No. 13 Northwestern in the first round of the Waco Regional. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
The other two teams in the double-elimination regional will be host Baylor and No. 21 Louisiana Lafayette.
The Bobcats are making their fourth NCAA tournament appearance after easily winning the Southland Conference regular season with a 23-6 league mark this year, then sweeping through the conference tournament last weekend in Lake Charles, LA.
The Bobcats, 39-16 overall, are 4-3 against teams in this year’s NCAA Tournament with wins against Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor.
Texas State posted the Southland’s best record at the 2003 NCAA Regional in Austin, where they finished 3-2. One of the wins came against Northwestern as Texas State walked away with a 3-1 victory. The Bobcats hold a 1-0 all-time series record versus the Wildcats.
The Wildcats, 31-13, will make their fifth-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament, earning the top seed in the region. Northwestern earned an at-large bid into the championship after finishing third in the Big 10.
The winner of the Waco region will face the winner of the Michigan region next weekend in the Super Regional round. The four teams in the Michigan region are the No. 5 overall seed Wolverines, as well as Miami (OH), Cleveland State and Notre Dame.
