San Marcos CISD (SMCISD) joined schools from across the country in celebrating Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation week, from May 4-8.
Food nutrition workers are trained sanitation and food safety experts who must also follow numerous local, state and federal regulations to ensure safe and healthy school meals.
“We try to use our creativity to make the cafeteria a fun and welcoming place all year long,” said SMCISD Associate Director of Child Nutrition Mike Boone, “and our staff performs their jobs each day because they care about the children they serve.”
Boone said SMCISD food services has a staff of 76 that provides 1,001,937 lunches and 365, 418 breakfasts each year. The school district runs a child nutrition budget of $3,209,076, with $2,065,398 in federal reimbursements and $198,901 in United States Department of Agriculture commodities.
“This week is an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and the community to thank those persons who provide healthy school meals to our children each day,” said SMCISD Assistant Superintendent for Business and Support Services Mike Abild.
Boone’s administrative staff consists of Assistant Director Melba Perez, Compliance & Production Supervisor Tony Mendoza, Secretary Christina Tovar and Accountability Systems Clerk Maribel Rivas. The warehouse consists of Andy Lerma and Gilbert Pavia.
