Optimists honor Baptist Academy students

 

San Marcos Academy seniors Katey Henry, Alex Hoke and Kelsey Henry show off the plaques they received at the Capital Area Optimist Youth Appreciation Week Awards Ceremony, held at the State Capitol in Austin on March 29.

Three seniors from San Marcos Baptist Academy (SMBA) were named tops in their respective categories at the 35th Annual Capital Area Optimist Youth Appreciation Week.

The winners, who were honored at the State Capitol in Austin on March 29, are Katie Henry for community service, Alex Hoke for vocal music and Kelsey Henry for instrumental music.

SMBA’s Color Guard posted the colors from the event, which was held in the Texas House of Representatives chamber. The guard has performed this service for the event for more than 20 years. Color Guard members are Cadets Chloe Rocha, Alex Vletas, Shane Boyer, Nolan Rutland and Patrick Gibson

SMBA’s winners were selected from a pool of nominees representing more than 20 other schools throughout the capital area. Other nominees selected by the SMBA faculty to represent the Academy at the event include the following:

  • Ellie Byrom – drama and Teenager of the Year
  • Jared Blalack and Amy Cope – Sports
  • Steven Pham – Community Service
  • Ha Nguyen – Science
  • Michael Zhang – Computer Science
  • Joanna Ferrell – Vocal Music
  • Joseph Wang – Instrumental Music
  • David Mebane – Foreign Language
  • Anastasia Parish – Government
  • Gom Park and Alice Gu – Mathematics
  • Ned Thayer and Ema Ourston – Art
  • David Abugaber – English and Teenager of the Year
  • Tabitha Mullins – English/Writing.
