Hays CISD announces summer schedule

Hays CISD recently announced its summer school schedule.

Elementary school grades two through five will attend summer school from June 8 until July 2 at Hemphill and Science Hall Elementary Schools. Hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Paige Collier, assistant principal at Hemphill, will serve as the 2009 summer school principal.

Middle school students will attend June 8 to July 2 at Chapa Middle School. Hours are 7:50 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Students currently in grades six, seven and eight with academic needs will be referred for summer school from their home campuses. Transportation and lunch will be provided for all students. John Salmeron, assistant principal of Barton Middle School, will serve as principal.

Lehman High School will be the summer school site for grades nine through 12, and school will be Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon. Robert Hensarling, assistant principal of Hays High School, will serve as principal. Transportation and lunch will be provided.

Students who have not met the standard on the TAKS exit level exam can participate in the TAKS review summer school from June 8 to July 10. Tuition is free. TAKS summer testing dates are July 14-17. Class will not be held for this group on July 3.

Student who want to get ahead in credits can participate in the Acceleration “Get Ahead” summer school. Classes will be held from June 8 to July 2 for communication applications and health. Classes will run June 8 through July 10 for BCIS, Geometry Pre AP and Algebra 2 Pre AP, with no class on July 3.

Costs for these courses are $200 for full credit, and $100 for half-credit. Fee waivers are available to reduce the cost sfor students who are eligible for free and reduced lunch programs.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided at Kyle Elementary School, Monday through Friday, from June 8 to August 7. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-8 a.m., and lunch will be served form 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Adults 22 years old and older will be charged $1.75 for breakfast, and $3 for lunch. Children do not have to qualify for meals.

The district’s Wellness Encouraged through Lifelong Learning (WELL) Clinic at Science Hall will be open for sports physicals, immunizations and other clinical needs throughout the summer. Call (512) 268-5218 for an appointment. The school-based center is open to all Hays CISD students. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Applications are available in the school’s counseling offices and on the district’s website. Registration from summer school will run from May 4 to May 29.
