League of Women Voters’ annual membership meeting coming up

SUBMITTED REPORT

The San Marcos Area League of Women Voters invites current and prospective members to attend its annual meeting and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7 at the Price Seniors Center, 222 W. San Antonio St.

The evening will open with a social from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the annual meeting at 6:45 p.m. On the agenda for the business meeting is the election of board members and officers for the new membership year. Tickets to the dinner are $15 at the door but dinner reservations must be made by Monday, May 4, 2009. Reservations may be made by e-mailing capeters12@austin.rr.com or calling (512) 357-2627 by May 4.

The dinner and meeting will bring to a close what has been a very busy year for the local League. A candidates’ “meet and greet,” the fall 2008 general election candidates’ debate, the annual wine tasting fundraiser, the recent San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District candidates’ debate, preparation of two Voters Guides and sending representatives to the League’s statewide conference and lobby day in Austin are among the year’s highlights. The candidates’ debates and the Voters Guide are two of the San Marcos Area League’s key voter services and voter education projects.

Next year could be even busier for the local group as it hosts the state League of Women Voters’ biannual state convention scheduled April 23-25, 2010, at the new San Marcos Convention Center.
The league’s focus on voter education has never been more important than it is today, San Marcos Area League President Carole Belver said.

“We are living in an interesting time, and during this time it is even more important to be a good steward of non-partisan information. It’s not about who is in office, but rather the actions that are taken. Getting involved with the League of Women Voters is one small step toward making a difference,” Belver said.

Open to men and women, the league’s guiding principles focus on belief in the representative form of government and individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States. A nonpartisan organization, the league’s guiding principle is that “democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens and requires that governmental bodies protect the citizen’s right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings and making public records accessible.”

The local league’s annual meeting is the time for members to pay their annual $40 dues for the 2009-2010 membership year.  Members and prospective members who are unable to attend the annual meeting may send their dues to the San Marcos LWV, P. O. Box 1034, San Marcos, TX 78667-1034. For information about the San Marcos Area League of Women Voters, call Jeannie Lewis at (512) 353-2872.
