San Marcos will have some special celebrity guests from May 2-4, as the 15th Annual Chartwells CenturyTel Texas State University-San Marcos Celebrity Classic comes back into town.
The theme for this year’s classic is, “Hit a ball and change a life!”
Actor Samuel L.Jackson will be present for the fundraiser, along with Burton “Bubba” Gilliam, Earl Billings, Jonathan Banks, Leslie Easterbrook, Richard Gant, Charley Pride and the Golf Channel’s Dan Boever. Many have attended the celebrity classic in past years.
A new face this year is Texas State Distinguished Alumnus and Hollywood star Powers Boothe, who will be joined by other newcomers Thomas Calabro, James Clement and Richard Kam.
The Celebrity Classic is Texas State’s premier fundraiser, providing funds for graduate student scholarships. Since its inception, the Celebrity Classic has raised close to $1 million.
A gala dinner and auction will be held the evening of May 2 in the LBJ Student Center. The morning of May 3, celebrities and sponsors will head to Quail Creek Country Club for the Classic’s annual golf scramble, and to Texas State’s tennis courts for the weekend’s tennis tournament. Both golf and tennis events start at 9:30 a.m.
The public is invited to both events to watch the competition, meet the celebrities and collect autographs.
On May 4, participants will head to the Onion Creek Club in Austin for the Golf Classic, which is presented for the first time this year by Blimpie. American Airlines is sponsoring Celebrity Classic DVDs, which are always presented to golfers and tennis players. Last year’s winner was a team from Coca Cola.
Texas State Graduate Dean Mike Willoughby, who chairs the Classic’s executive committee, said revenue from the 2008 event raised $109,000, with more than 45 scholarships awarded. He attributes the success of the event to the generosity of its sponsors.
In addition to Chartwells, CentruryTel, American Airlines and Blimpie, sponsors for this year’s Classic include H.E.B., Brown Distribution Company, CenterPoint Energy, FedEx Kinko’s, First Transit, Embassy Suites-San Marcos, IKON Office Solutions, International Power-Hays, The Legends Group, Priority Personnel, Rocking JT Ranch (James and Terri Isbell), Subway of San Marcos, Staples/Summus Industries and the Texas State University Bookstore.
Other sponsors are Coca Cola, Frost Bank, LifeTime Marketing LLC, McPherson Cellars, Maui Tacos, Ki and Wendy Norman and Onion Creek Club.
