Freshman pitcher Chandler Hall turned in another brilliant performance Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field, tossing a three-hit shutout as Texas State clinched its second Southland Conference regular season title in as many years with a 1-0 win against Stephen F. Austin (SFA).
Hall improved her record to 20-9 with the gem, which improved the Bobcats to 34-15 overall and 21-7 in the league. Hall leads the conference with a 0.55 ERA in league play.
“We came out today knowing that all we needed was one more win to claim the title,” Texas State coach Ricci Woodard said. “It’s great to win here at home in front of our family and fans.”
Alex Newton led off the game with a home run for Texas State, which proved to be the only run of the game. SFA managed only four base runners in the game, including none in the first three innings. SFA put two runners on in the fourth, placing runners at second and third with two out, but a ground out finished the threat.
Newton notched two of Texas State’s four hits.
The Bobcats set up their clincher by scoring in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday for a 3-2 win against SFA. Jenna Emery drove in the game winner with a one-out sacrifice fly, pushing Taylor Hall across from third base.
Katie Garnett went the distance for the win, allowing five hits in seven innings and improving her record to 14-5.
The Bobcats will be the top seed at the Southland Conference Tournament to be played at McNeese State in two weeks. They will play their last home game Thursday against North Texas.
“Even though we have claimed the SLC Regular Season title, we still have the SLC tournament to prepare for,” Woodard said. “Our business is not yet finished, with our goal being the NCAA Tournament.”Email | Print
