Texas State’s baseball team continued its torrid play Wednesday night in Waco, notching its ninth win in a tow with a 7-2 decision against Baylor at Baylor Ballpark. Thus, the Bobcats won for the second time in three games this year against the Big 12 foe.
The win raised Texas State to 28-10 this season, while Baylor fell to 25-14.
Texas State shortstop Jason Martinson hit a two-run homer in the first inning, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Junior Garret Carruth held the lead until the bottom of the fifth, when Baylor scored twice to tie the game, 2-2.
Texas State answered immediately with a double down the right line from Martinson and Tyler Sibley backed it with a base hit to the same corner. Atwood laced a single to third base and Martinson rushed home. With runners on second and third, Paul Goldschmidt hit a sacrifice fly and and Spenser Dennis singled, driving in the two runs and giving Texas State a 5-2 lead.
Ben Theriot grew the lead by two more runs in the top of the ninth with a towering home run over the centerfield wall, driving in Keith Prestridge ahead of him.
Tyler Brundridge struck out two in 1 1/3 innings for his second win against Baylor this year. Lance Loftin and Michael Russo each pitched an inning of relief to hold off Baylor in the end.
Theriot went 3-for-5 in the outing and Martinson went 3-for-3 to lead Texas State at the plate. Ross Speed took the loss for Baylor after pitching 1/3 of the seventh inning and allowing three runs on two hits.
Texas State will host McNeese State in a three-game Southland Conference series this weekend. First pitch at Bobcat Field Friday night is set for 6:30 p.m. Single games will follow Saturday and Sunday.Email | Print
