Texas State women’s tennis No. 5 seed in Southland Conference tournament


The Texas State women’s tennis team will play Northwestern State in the first round of the Southland Conference Tennis Championship on Friday at the HEB Tennis Center in Corpus Christi.

The Bobcats enter the tournament at the number-five seed with a 7-4 Southland Conference record and will meet the number-four seeded Lady Demons, who finished the 2009 campaign with an 8-3 SLC mark at 2:30 p.m. This marks the third straight season that Texas State has played in the Southland Conference Tournament. Northwestern State tied UTSA for third place, but lost the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The winner of Texas State-Northwestern State match will advance to the semifinals of the tournament and play the winner of the match between top-seeded UT Arlington and the number-eight seeded Stephen F. Austin. The Mavericks finished the regular season undefeated in SLC play with an 11-0 record. UTA last won the SLC tournament in 2004 and has appeared in the finals four of the last five years. SFA secured the eighth and final spot with a victory against Southeastern Louisiana on Monday and enters the tournament with a 4-7 league record.

The Lady Jacks are playing for its first tournament championship and have not reached the tournament final since the Southland reverted back to dual match championships in 1999.

Tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned the No. 7 seed and will take on No. 2 Lamar in a first-round match on Friday at noon. This is the Islanders first tournament appearance. The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion, Lamar finished the season with a second-best league record at 10-1, duplicating its performance from the 2008 regular season.

Taking on the winner of the match between the Islanders and Lady Cardinals will be the winner of the match on Friday at noon between No. 3 UTSA and No. 6 Sam Houston State. Finishing with an 8-3 mark, the Roadrunners last reached a tournament final in 2003 and last won the tournament championship in 2002. Sam Houston State, which last reached the semifinal round in 2007, is making its fifth consecutive tournament appearance after finishing the season with a 6-4 mark.

The winners of Friday’s quarterfinal matches will meet Saturday at noon. The two semifinal winners will meet on Sunday at 3 p.m. to play for the championship.
