Hays County to participate in Public Health Fair

The Hays County Personal Health Department (HCPHD) will participate in a Community Public Health Fair on April 24, at the San Marcos Convention Center from 8-11:30 a.m.

HCPHD will provide information on adult vaccines for Hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, shingles, bacterial meningococcal disease and the combined tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine.

Additionally, Texas State students with ID will be able to receive the Gardasil vaccine, which has been shown to be effective in preventing 70 percent of all cervical cancers.

Participants will be able to sign up for low-cost mammograms, which will be provided by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization at a later date. Other organizations will provide information on early detection and screening for various types of cancer, such as skin, breast, lymphoma, cervical, testicular, uterine, oral and colon/rectal cancer.

A free workshop called, “Cancer has struck your family: what do you do now?” is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

These events are part of Cancer Awareness Month in Hays County. The San Marcos Conference Center is located at 1001 East McCarty Lane in San Marcos. The First Baptist Church, NBC, is offering free transportation to and from the convention center for those who need it. Arrangements must be made by 5 p.m. on April 23.
