Goodnight Middle School.
STAFF REPORT
Goodnight Middle School will be dedicated on April 16, at 6 p.m.
Named for Owen L. Goodnight, who was the former San Marcos High School Athletic Director and head coach from 1951 to 1967, the school will cut its ceremonial ribbon on its front steps. Afterward, the program will move inside, featuring student performances, special speakers and a presentation of “The Owen Goodnight Story.”
The theme of the evening is “Remembering the Past, Forging into the Future.” Goodnight’s daughters, Debbie Hansen and Pam Hall, will speak.
Goodnight was one of the most admired coaches in San Marcos history, known as a friend to all students. He was honored with an induction into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor.
Tables that feature Goodnight’s history will be located outside the library, and refreshments will be served. Goodnight Middle School is located at 1301 Highway 123.
Owen L. Goodnight was my captain in CO. H. 291 Infantry 75th Division. He played a great role in my life. He was a great commander. When combat ended I went into the kitchen. He would come into the kitchen for morning coffee. Once he asked me if I were going to school after the army and I told him I had thought about it but had no money and didn’t know if I could make it even with a GI Bill. He began to tell me of his life and how he had worked in an ice house summers. He was constantly encouraging and supportive. PS: I did go to school and ended up a professor of social work.
