Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) is observing National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) on April 16.
The event is designed to highlight the importance of advance directives, which alert medical professionals and loved ones about the wishes of a patient if they are no longer able to convey them. These directives are usually a living will and medical power of attorney.
“As a result of NHDD, we believe more people in our community will have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and complete advance directives to make their wishes known,” said CTMC Hospice Care Director Linda Lopez. “Advance directives are a gift to family members because they take away the difficult end-of-life healthcare decisions affecting their loved one.”
Continued Lopez, “With advance directives, physicians and healthcare organizations are equipped to honor patient wishes and address end-of-life healthcare planning issues before a medical crisis occurs.”
CTMC Hospice Care will provide information and tools to enable the public to execute these written directives in accordance with Texas laws, and advise about how to talk about ones wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers.
