Texas State professor to head national composer assocation

Texas State faculty member Dimitar Nivov has been chosen as the chairman of the board of directors of the National Association of Composers/USA (NACUSA).

Nivov, who was born and raised in Bulgaria, earned his Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin in composition. He also holds master’s degrees in music history and composition from the National Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Nivov’s has produced works for orchestra, choir, voice and piano. He has been awarded several national and international prizes from competitions in the United States, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. His research includes tonal harmony, musical form, meter and ear training. Nivov previously taught at UT and at the University of South Carolina.

A Lonely Man’s Prayer and Piano Album for Youth are some of Nivov’s published works. Prayer was featured on the Made in the Americas CD compilation.

Nivov is also active as the concert coordinator for the Texas Chapter of NACUSA, and has co-hosted several new music conferences at Texas State.

NACUSA was founded in 1933, and counts among its members some of the greatest artists to date, including Igor Stravinsky, Arturo Toscanini, Serge Koussevitzky, Virgil Thompson and Otto Luening.
