CTMC offers boot camp for weight loss


Krystal Gomez didn’t know how to lose the weight she gained during pregnancy. She had to break the eating and physical habits she maintained during nine months of pregnancy, and two months of sleepless maternity leave.

“Heath’s boot camp was just what the doctor ordered,” said Gomez, the hospital’s Performance Improvement manager. “I am now happy to report I have lost all of my baby weight. I am healthier than before my pregnancy. I feel great, have lots of energy to run around after my daughter, and sleep better than ever before. Boot camp has really been an answer to my prayers. It has changed the way I look at exercise, food, and life.”

CTMC’s Fitness Boot Camp is a six-week program that meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the hospital’s Center for Wellness & Sports Performance. Participants can choose what time of day works best for them; Boot Camp meets from 8-9 a.m., noon-1 p.m. and 4-5 p.m. Training begins April 13th through May 29th for a fee of $180.

Under the direction of certified trainer, Heath Herrera, M.Ed., CSCS, Boot Camp participants are increasing their endurance, strength, speed, agility, flexibility and self esteem, and gaining the knowledge and ability to achieve their desired weight.

Herrera knows a thing or two about conditioning and weight loss. After topping out at 270 lbs at one point in his life, the 5’11” Herrera began a journey of conditioning and weight loss that led to his eventual career path. Today, Herrera sustains a weight of 203 lbs, serves as a Wellness Specialist with CTMC and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NASCA).

Thanks to his personal struggle, as well as many years of professionally counseling others, Herrera has learned that every person is different and needs different motivations and methods to achieve his or her goals.

CTMC’s Boot Camp is one of the many ways the hospital is practicing and applying its Creation Health principles. From the Community Walking Trail that wraps around the campus, to community education programs, to the vegetarian options served daily in the cafeteria, to its recent move to a completely smoke-free campus, CTMC has long been committed to helping individual create their own better health.
