The San Marcos High School (SMHS) Diamond Line dance team was named as the 2009 State Champions at the Showmakers of America Texas State Dance Championships, held from March 6-7.
The team also won awards for technique, precision, choreography and showmanship, according to Diamond Line Team Director Michelle Cearley, who was also thankful to all the SMHS coaches who allowed the team to use the gym in the middle of basketball season.
“The officers received second place overall in the Large Team division,” Cearley said, “and Justin Campos was awarded fifth place for his solo performance.
The event capped off a successful year for the dancers. On Feb. 28, the team competed at the Alamo City Dance Classic, another Showmakers of America event. Officers Mariel Swinney, Gabriela Contreras and Jill Davis won first place in every category, earning the “Best in Class” award for their division, while the entire team earned another “Best in Class” award, and the “Line of Champions” recognition.
Prior to that the Diamond Line team won “Grand Champion” status at the Showmakers of America Greter Houston Spectacular Contest, along with another “Line of Champions” distinction and “Best in Class Runner Up.”
The team also participated in the “HTEDance” contest in New Braunfels, where Campos won first place honors in the ninth to tenth grade solo competition. Stephanie Oviedo won fifth place in the 11-12 grade solo competition, and Cami and Emily Ramos won second place for their duet.Email | Print
