Women's cigar session at Wine Cellar

STAFF REPORT“A woman is just a woman but a good cigar is a smoke,” according to Rudyard Kipling’s infamous poem “The Betrothed.” One can argue that this says more against marriage than it says for cigars, but, either way, the Wine Cellar on the corner of LBJ Drive and Hopkins Streey hopes that women also understand the joys of a good smoke. The Wine Cellar’s second  “Cigar Class 101” takes place on March 31 at 6 p.m. This session they will focus on Cuba and, of course, the favorite contraband export of the country, the Cuban cigar. Reservations are required to participate in the free event, so call (512) 805-WINE if you are interested in joining the group. No real Cuban cigars will be lit at the Wine Cellar although there will be an opportunity to sample a couple of “counterfeit” ones, as well as lessons on how to properly cut, light and enjoy the smoking of a cigar.Historically, cigars have brought out the poet in their proponents with everyone from Churchill to Evelyn Waugh to Mark Twain extolling their virtues. However the cigar is not strictly for men in the study after the dinner hour anymore, and women have been smoking cigars ever since Georges Sand made it revolutionary to wear men’s clothes and smoke.Even one of Sands’ many famous friends, composer Franz Liszt, said that “A good Cuban cigar closes the door to the vulgarities of the world.”If women need more contemporary cigar smoking role models to encourage them, there’s always Madonna and Demi Moore, and there is the theory that a woman in a cigar club pretty much has the field to herself. In this day and age, though, research has been done to establish why women smoke cigars.A study conducted by the Association for Women Cigar Smokers indicates that 97 percent of men feel “peaceful” when smoking a cigar while women have a variety of different responses.  Women responded by saying that they felt powerful (24 percent), attractive (25 percent), strong (15 percent), fun (43 percent) and rebellious (22 percent). All this can be sorted out at the Wine Cellar’s Cigar 101, class where it’s just possible that they will find something akin to the famous apocryphal Freud quote that, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”

  1. I guess I wasn’t clear in this piece but the Wine Cellar’s Cigar 101 classes are open to both men and women, they are just encouraging women to attend.
My bad. Sorry for any confusion.

  2. Wow, that’s a fast stretch going from one cigar to cancer in less than a page. Possible, but not likely.
